Garage Sale: page 39

Ann Arbor, Michigan: The Sixth Garage

No Va

Chevy
Nova, bright red,
my thoughts...with schooled driving
coursing through my veins, I take wheels
and go

shifting
power steering,
breaking--stopping--coasting
"no parking" bending forty-five
degrees

driving
the rough terrain
dirt roads direct to hell
for my father, changing gears, his
request

pot-holes
dipping, plunging,
bucking, embarrassed car
parking, my driving lesson, sadly
ending

  1. Must you remind us of those 'training wheels', the cars with minds of their own, parents whose stricken faces could not disguise their realization that this had indeed been a very bad idea?

As with the others, this poem invokes it all.

"I can call spirits from the vasty deep."
    "Aye, but will they come?"*

In this case, yes, no doubt about it. Hilarious.

    (*Shakespeare from memory.)
