Genesis
~For Angel~

Fire ignites the seed;
breaks the encasement;
expands the shell for freedom.
Wait and watch.
Beg it to grow.
See the ringlets of green-white life
begin to knit their way
down into the soil;
deep into the pulsing wells;
springs of plumping water.

This poem was written at the NW Children's book conference in July 2009.
The assignment was to write a poem using 6 of 7 words given.
The words I chose: fire, seed, beg, ring, watch, knit.

Angel was a friend who fought cancer for years,
and finally succumbed to it the day after I wrote this.
His positive view of life and appreciation for the earth
are attributes I wish to honor.
